City U18s v Chelsea: BU18PL match preview

City U18s welcome Chelsea to the Academy Stadium on Saturday morning, 11am kick off (GMT)…

The game will see the North and South division winners collide as Jason Wilcox’s side face arguably the toughest opponent in the National league.

City beat Everton to the North division title on goal difference while Chelsea claimed the South division with an eight point gap between themselves and Reading.

The two can also meet in the FA Youth Cup final, should City overcome either Arsenal or Liverpool and Chelsea beat Blackburn over two legs, to renew a rivalry that saw Chelsea pick up the prestigious trophy last season.

Wilcox’s side head into the game in fine form and are unbeaten in ten games, with their latest victory coming on Monday in the FA Youth Cup quarter final against Norwich.

Spanish duo Brahim Diaz and Manu Garcia were on target in that match to send the young Blues into the last four of the competition.

Speaking to mcfc.co.uk, Brahim said: “I can’t wait for the Chelsea game because we’ve got a great chance to win the national league now. We’re looking forward to playing at the Academy Stadium again as well.”

The 16-year old has certainly stepped up to the task this season with him continuing to impress in the U18s league, FA Youth Cup and the UEFA Youth League, as well as training with the first team, with the Spanish youngster stating his delight at how everything has panned out so far.

He commented: “I’m very happy with how things are going this season, it’s a dream come true for me. I’m still trying to chase the big dream, which is to get in the first team.

“I’m very thankful to all my team mates because they help me both on and off the pitch, especially with my English. This season has been great for me and I can’t wait for more!”

Manager Wilcox also spoke to mcfc.co.uk ahead of the Chelsea clash and says he believes it will be a great occasion and another stage of the U18s development.

The 44-year old stated: “We’re playing Chelsea at the Academy Stadium and it will be a fantastic game for the lads. It’s going to be a great occasion.

"Playing against Chelsea is always difficult but it is part of their development: playing at the stadium and playing in big games.

“It was great to win the North division and now we want to win the National league, as well. It’s going to be difficult, it’s going to be a test for the squad but the lads will definitely rise to the task.”
