England u16s secure third at Montaigu tournament

Academy duo Cameron Humphreys and Will Patching helped England u16s secure third place in the annual Montaigu tournament.

The young Lions recorded a win, a draw and a loss in their three group games to progress to the third place play off, when they overcame France on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw.

Humphreys played the first 41 minutes of the clash with the French, while Patching was a second half sub as England held their nerve to sign off on a positive note.

In a tournament designed to give a host of promising youngsters international experience, there were plenty of substitutions across all four matches.

Defender Humphreys clocked up all 90 minutes in the opening 2-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia, but stayed on the bench for the following two fixtures before making his return to the starting line-up against the French.

Meanwhile, his City teammate played the second 45 minutes against Saudi Arabia, before adding 73 minutes to his tally in the 1-1 draw with South Korea and completing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Portugal in the final game of the group stages.

Both City youngsters made their England bows earlier in the season as part of the Victory Shield, and Humphreys captained his country against Scotland last November.

Elsewhere, Jorge Intima scored twice in three games to help Portugal u19s triumph in the Porto tournament.

His Portuguese side won all three of their games against Georgia, Czech Republic and Russia to claim the trophy, and the City u18s winger played a part in each fixture as he took the opportunity to shine on the international stage.

After playing 90 minutes in the opening 4-1 victory over Georgia he emerged from the bench as a late sub in the following 3-0 win over the Czechs, but scored within two minutes of taking the field.

Intima capped off a fine individual tournament with a first half strike in the final game against Russia, clocking up another 63 minutes for his country.

The Portuguese youth international is now set to return to City to help the u18s in their bid for play off glory.
