Henshall makes a fine start

Alex Henshall is not the highest profile signing of City's summer but the teenage winger has already made his mark with an accomplished debut in Berlin.

England youth player Henshall, who joined the Academy from Swindon last month, was at the heart of the Boy Blues' emphatic 8-0 win over Empor in their opening tour match.

He was brought down by the Berlin side's goalkeeper for the first-half penalty that opened the floodgates and subsequently took a key role in City's domination of play.

City coach Scott Sellars was delighted with the collective performance but added: "Alex in his first game since coming to us from Swindon was a real threat - he looks like a real talent."

Henshall, who joined Swindon as an eight-year-old and made the senior bench, was one of the most sought-after youngsters in his age group and Liverpool were linked before he joined City.

City’s Head of the Academy Mark Allen said: "Alex will provide excellent balance on the left hand side of the field and is an exciting addition to our existing group of players.

We are looking forward to helping him develop even further following on from the good start to his career he had at Swindon Town

Sellars and City's coaching staff are careful not to put pressure on Alex, who played in  England Under-16s' Victory Shield games and is expected to progress on the national scene.

Swindon chairman Andrew Fitton, following Henshall's progress with interest, said: "We like the set-up at Manchester City and the Henshall family decided it's a good place to go.

"One of the things you have to do is look at what's best for the player. He's a special talent but he's also young, so he's got a lot of learning to do."
