Academy Platt Lane 2008

The achievements of the City Academy were celebrated at the 2008 Hall of Fame awards, held at the City of Manchester Stadium this week.

TV presenters and lifelong Blues John Stapleton and Susan Bookbinder hosted the evening, which was attended by famous names from City’s past and the present, including Tony Book, Francis Lee, Colin Bell and Micah Richards.

The work at Platt Lane, which has seen 25 players graduate into the City first team over the last decade, was acknowledged with the Special Achievement award, presented to Academy manager Jim Cassell.

The audience of nearly 400 guests also voted overwhelmingly for Shaun Wright-Phillips’ goal in the 2004 derby as the greatest scored by an Academy graduate for the Blues.

There was also recognition for some great names from the past as well, with Fred Tilson and Neil Young, who scored FA Cup-winning goals in the 1930s and 1960s respectively, being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Alex Williams MBE was presented with the Lifetime Achievement for his work with the Club’s ground-breaking City In The Community scheme.
