That's all for tonight

A sad night as the defence of our Champions League trophy comes to an end.

We'll have to dust ourselves off and be ready to go again as we're next in action in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea at Wembley.

There's also the small matter of six more Premier League games. We know that if we win all of those we'll be champions for a record fourth straight season.

Pep Guardiola reaction 🗣

Congratulations to Real Madrid. They defend so deep with incredible solidarity. We did everything. I don’t have any regrets. Always as managers we try to create more and concede less because that helps to win. They make a good goal. We play exceptional in all departments. Unfortunately we could not win. It is what it is.

Ruben Dias reaction 🗣

OVERRIDING EMOTIONS?

I don’t even really know what to say. It’s just frustrating. We dominated the game, the whole game. In the end, you go to penalties, the effort was there. We had our chances. It’s obviously a difficult one to take.

HORRIBLE TO GO OUT ON PENALTIES?

Of course, you always end up, the way we controlled the game, you do everything to avoid going to penalties because in a way it’s what they wanted. But yeah, it’s difficult to take it. There’s only one way, the way is forward.

CHANCES MISSED?

You have many ways to look at it. From our side, we look at what we could do better. The team was there. We fought and had our chances. I guess it was not our day.

End of an incredible Champions League run

Before tonight we had gone unbeaten at home in 30 Champions League matches, stretching back to 2018.

That's an English record, eclipsing Arsenal's run between September 2004 and April 2009.

Knocking on the door

City had 88 touches in the opposition box; the most on record in a Champions League match (since 2007/08).

Our 33 shots were also the most in a knockout stage game in the competition since Liverpool (34) versus Atletico Madrid in March 2020.

All of the City players have now left the field after clapping the fans all the way. The Madrid players have stayed to celebrate with their fans in the far corner.

The Etihad Stadium applauds 👏

A brilliant two-legged tie hasn't gone our way right at the very end, but the players gave their all.

The Etihad sings Blue Moon to acknowledge those efforts and the players respond by clapping the fans.
