Another one in the history books

That was another superb instalment of this modern Premier League rivalry - the division's two best teams in recent years.

The reverse fixture will come in March, when it's likely both teams will have plenty to play for.

However, our immediate future will see us take on plenty of exceptional challenges too. Leipzig are the visitors on Tuesday and victory in that one will see us guarantee top spot in Group G of the Champions League.

Then it's Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Premier League, two of the most exciting teams in the league this season.

We'll have a lot more reaction to today's game to come, but we'll back with our live offering on Tuesday for that Champions League clash. See you then!

Pep reacts to today's game 💬

"That was an excellent performance. I am really proud that after eight years we are still playing that way. We were really good in all departments and needed to be against an incredible team.

"Maybe we missed the last pass a little bit but they defended really well. To concede just two shots on target against Liverpool is a big compliment for the way we work."

Jurgen Klopp on the result 💬

"If you ask me who was most likely to win the game, of course it was City."

Haaland's tally

Erling Haaland has now scored against 20 of the 21 opposing sides he’s faced in the Premier League with the only exception being Brentford.

Haaland has only faced the west London club once.

Doku's dribbles

Jeremy Doku completed 11 dribbles today, the most in a single Premier League game since September 2021 (Adama Traoré vs Brentford, also 11), while it’s the most on record (since 2006-07) a player has completed in a Premier League game against Liverpool.

End of a special run

That is, of course, the first time we have failed to win at the Etihad in 2023.

The 23 consecutive victories across all competition is the second best an English team has ever managed, with only Sunderland's 24 successive wins ending in 1892 beating it.

Nathan Ake talking to Sky Sports 💬

"I think overall we played really well. It was a tough match – we knew it was going to be tough. We tried to keep the ball and be more calm than we were against Chelsea.

"Especially in this kind of game it’s [about] small margins. [For the first goal] we thought they were going to counter-attack and then we got the goal. In the second half it was the same - we had a chance with Erling and then they scored.

"Always in the counter-attack it’s difficult [against Liverpool]. Especially as defenders, we know Salah and Nunez are going to run at you. They have players like Trent who can put passes in the right areas, so it’s always difficult.

"We wanted to win. We had a lot of chances. We’re disappointed with only having one shot on target in the second half. In the end we’re a little disappointed."

How the 50th happened

A brilliant run and pass from Ake and as lethal as you'd expect from Erling.
